These dates come from an ephemeris calculation, the same one Charm and Soul uses to track transits. They mark the stations themselves, the two instants when Mercury appears to stand still. What those weeks mean for you depends on where they land in your own chart.

The shape of the year

All three of this year's retrogrades fall in water signs: Pisces, then Cancer, then Scorpio. Each one also begins and ends in the same sign, so no window crosses a sign boundary part-way through. Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio are the three signs of one element, and they sit in a triangle around the zodiac. The first window: Mercury retrograde in Pisces

Pisces is a difficult sign for Mercury in traditional astrology. It is the sign of Mercury's detriment and its fall, which means the planet of clear, precise thought is working in a sign that dissolves edges and thinks in images. Even when Mercury is direct in Pisces, words tend to blur and intentions get read between the lines. Retrograde, that tendency doubles back on itself.

In practice this window is prone to vagueness. An agreement made on a feeling turns out to mean different things to two people. Second house. Money and possessions. Recheck payments, receipts and budgets. Things you own may need repair, and a question about what you value comes back.

Third house. Everyday communication, siblings, neighbours and short trips. Double-check messages and addresses, and allow extra time for local travel.

Fourth house. Home and family. Household repairs, family conversations and memories of where you grew up tend to come forward.

Fifth house. Romance, creativity and children. An old flame or a shelved creative project may resurface. Play and making things come easier than decisions.

Sixth house. Daily work, routines and health. Schedules slip and colleagues misunderstand each other. It is a good time to fix a routine rather than invent a new one.

Seventh house. Partnership and contracts. An old conversation with a partner returns to be finished. Read agreements carefully before signing.
