Two kinds of number

Everything in this system comes from one of two inputs, and it is worth knowing which before you start.

From your birth date come the numbers about timing and about the shape of a life: the Life Path, which is the number a whole life is counted on; the Birth Day, which adds what the day itself contributes; the Personal Year, which describes the twelve months you are standing in; and the long bands — Cycles, Pinnacles and Challenges — that cut a life into dated stretches. A birth date is all of it. No time, no place, no name.

From the name on your birth record come the numbers about character and drive: the Expression, from every letter; the Soul Urge, from the vowels alone; the Personality, from the consonants. Those three carry an identity you can check by eye — the vowels and the consonants must add back to the whole name — and that identity is stated constantly in this category and demonstrated almost never.

Both tracks are live and both are free in the same way — the number and its derivation, no account, no email. The Life Path and the Personal Year come from the date; the Name Desk returns all three name numbers at once, and the Expression and the Soul Urge have a page each.

Here is what “the arithmetic shown” means in practice. Maria Isabel Santos is invented — nobody’s birth record — but the numbers below are not typed into this page. They are computed, right now, by the same module that writes our paid readings, from a name and a date and nothing else.

Why we print the working

Because in this category almost nobody does, and the absence is doing work. A number asserted without its derivation cannot be checked, which means it cannot be wrong in any way a reader can detect. That is comfortable for the person publishing it and useless to the person reading it.

It also keeps us honest in a specific, structural way. There is exactly one piece of arithmetic in our system — one module that reduces a total — and every surface asks it: this page, the free calculators, and the readings people pay for. The free number and the paid number are the same number by construction, not by policy, which is the kind of promise worth making because it cannot quietly stop being true.

The conventions behind that module are published in full on our house rules — the alphabet, the Y and W rule, where master numbers survive, where karmic debt is looked for, and why we turn the year on your birthday rather than on 1 January. If a number here ever contradicts a rule there, that is a defect, and it is visible to you.

What we refuse to claim

No predictions of events. No grading a year, a number or a person as good or bad. No financial, medical, legal or fertility direction — which rules out most of what the rest of this category writes about an 8 year, and we say so on that page rather than quietly omitting it. No lore we would have to hedge the moment somebody asked us where it came from.

What is left after all that is a smaller claim and a keepable one: we will count accurately, show the counting, and describe what a number is organised around. Everything you can check, you should check.
