A Charm for Starting Something You've Delayed

The weight of waiting
There is a specific kind of tired that comes from thinking about a project you have not touched in months. It is not physical exhaustion. It is the mental drag of an unfinished sentence hanging in the air.
You have the notes. You have the desire. But every time you sit down to begin, the friction feels too high. You reach for your phone instead, or clean the corners of the kitchen.
Meet the heavy brass token
This is where a simple physical object helps. We keep a solid brass coin on the desk for precisely this reason. It has no magic properties, and it will not do the work for you.
What it does is interrupt the loop. Brass is dense and cool when you first pick it up. Holding it forces your hands to stop scrolling and start feeling weight.
The two-minute reset
When you find yourself stuck at the starting line, put the phone in another room. Sit at your workspace with the token in your palm.
Do not try to finish the task. Do not even try to do a good job. Just set a timer on the stove for two minutes, place the brass piece on the corner of your keyboard or notebook, and write the absolute worst version of whatever comes next.
Allow the sentences to be clumsy. Allow the first draft to embarrass you. The token is there to remind you that starting is a physical act, not a moral achievement.
When the timer goes off, you can stop if you want to. Most of the time, you will keep going.
A quiet finish
Put the charm back in its dish when the work is done for the day. Let it sit there in plain sight, waiting for the next time you need to trick yourself into moving.
