A Practice for the Week You Canceled Everything

Sign in to keep this for your altar.

Some weeks do not ask for a makeover or a massive emotional breakthrough. They simply ask you to stay inside, ignore the group chat, and let the noise settle down.

If you have canceled your plans and turned your phone face down, you are not failing. You are just arriving at the exact right moment to tend to your own baseline.

You do not need an altar cloth or a specialty shop run for this. Walk into your kitchen. Grab a glass of tap water, a pinch of salt from the shaker, a plain candle, and the air already sitting in your lungs.

The four corners of a quiet room

Sit down at a table or on the floor where you will not be interrupted for ten minutes. You are going to use four ordinary things to remind your body that it is safe to stop bracing for impact.

Set the glass of water in front of you. Place the pinch of salt beside it. Light the candle. Take a slow, deep breath through your nose and let it out through your mouth until your ribs soften.

This is not about manifesting a new life. This is about catching your own weight.

What to do with the elements

Dip just the tip of your finger into the salt, then touch it to your tongue. Notice the sharp, grounding taste of it. Salt is the anchor. It reminds your skin where your edges are when you feel like you are dissolving into your to-do list.

Take a sip of the water. Feel it go all the way down. Water is the permission to move. It takes whatever is stuck in your throat and washes it back down into the earth.

Stare at the candle flame for twenty breaths. Let the fire hold the scattered pieces of your attention so your brain can finally stop multitasking.

Finally, close your eyes and take one massive breath that fills your lower belly. That is your air. It belongs to you, not your job, not your inbox, not anyone else.

Letting the heavy part go

When the candle has burned down a little and your shoulders have dropped an inch or two, blow the flame out.

Pour the remaining water into the sink and watch it swirl down the drain, taking any leftover tension with it. Wash your hands in warm water.

Go put on sweatpants that have no elastic cutting into your waist. Get under a heavy blanket and let the rest of the world wait outside the door until you are ready to open it again.
