A Ritual for Untangling an Overthought Decision
Sign in to keep this for your altar.
You have been turning this choice over in your mind until the edges are completely worn down. You wake up thinking about it. You fall asleep arguing with yourself about it. At this point, the thinking isn't helping you find an answer. It is just keeping you stuck in the same small circle.
The problem with too much thought
When you spend weeks weighing every possible outcome, your head becomes a crowded room. You lose the quiet space where your actual intuition lives. Logic is useful, but fear often wears the mask of logic. It whispers that if you just think a little harder, you can control the future.
You cannot. The only way out of the loop is to bring the decision down out of the clouds and into your actual body.
What you need
You do not need an altar or rare herbs for this. Go to your kitchen. Grab a plain glass, fill it with tap water, and bring a small pinch of common salt from your pantry. Find a single candle. It does not matter what color it is or how fancy it smells. Just find something that holds a flame.
Clear off a small patch of your table. Sit down where you will not be interrupted for ten minutes.
Lighting the flame
Set the glass of water in front of you. Place the pinch of salt beside it. Light your candle and set it just behind the glass.
Look at the flame for a moment. Let your shoulders drop away from your ears. We carry an enormous amount of physical tension in our upper bodies when we are trying to force a conclusion. Notice where you are tight, and let the breath move into those spots.
Naming the weight
Take the pinch of salt between your fingers. Do not put it in the water yet.
Say the choice out loud. Do not give a speech. Just state the two paths plainly, as if you were telling a friend across a kitchen table. When you name it out loud, the decision often shrinks. It stops being a vague monster in the dark and becomes a simple fork in the road.
Drop the salt into the water.
Watch it fall to the bottom. Salt dissolves. It does not disappear, but it changes form. It becomes part of the water. Let this remind you that making a choice is not about destroying one option to save another. It is about letting things integrate so you can move forward.
The breath test
Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose. Hold it for a second, then let it out through your mouth like a long sigh.
Imagine walking down the first path. Just picture yourself waking up tomorrow having made that choice. Notice how your stomach feels. Does it drop with dread, or does it settle into a quiet sort of relief?
Now imagine the other path. Notice the physical reaction. Your body usually knows the answer long before your brain stops arguing with it. Your nervous system reacts to truth faster than your thoughts can rationalize it.
Closing the loop
Blow out the candle. Take a small sip of the salt water.
It might taste a little strange, but that is the point. It is real. It is grounded. You have brought the problem out of the abstract ether and tasted it.
Take the glass to the sink and pour it out. As the water goes down the drain, let the frantic part of the thinking go with it. You have done enough analyzing for today. Give yourself permission to sleep on the clarity you just found.
