What Manifestation Really Is
Sign in to keep this for your altar.
Wanting something can feel like a lot of pressure.
Maybe you’ve heard all the buzz about manifestation – the vision boards, the high vibes, the “act as if” mantras. And maybe, like a lot of us, you’ve tried it and felt… well, not much. Or worse, you’ve felt like you’re doing it wrong, or that your desires aren’t big enough, or that your mood isn’t always perfectly aligned.
Let’s talk about what manifestation really is, stripped of all the performance.
It Starts With Being Honest
Before you can call something into your life, you have to admit you want it. This sounds simple, but it’s often the hardest part. We get so good at telling ourselves why we can’t have something, or why it’s unrealistic, or why we shouldn’t want it in the first place.
Sometimes, the wanting itself feels vulnerable. What if you want something and don’t get it? What if you want something that feels silly or selfish? What if you want something that would completely upend your current life?
Manifestation isn’t about wanting the “right” things. It’s about giving yourself permission to want what you actually want, without judgment. It’s about looking at that desire, no matter how small or how wild, and saying, “Yes. That.”
Let Go of the How
Once you’re clear on what you want, the next big hurdle is often trying to figure out how it will happen. We start mapping out the steps, the timeline, the exact sequence of events. And while planning has its place, getting too fixated on the 'how' can actually block the very thing you’re trying to manifest.
Think about it: when you’re rigid about the path, you close yourself off to other possibilities. The universe, or life, or whatever you want to call it, often has more creative ways of bringing things to you than you could ever imagine. Your job isn’t to be the logistical manager of the cosmos.
Your job is to hold the clear vision of the what, and then practice a kind of open-handedness about the how. This doesn't mean doing nothing. It means taking inspired action when it feels right, but not forcing action out of a place of anxiety or control.
"High Vibes Only" Isn't the Point
This is a big one. The idea that you have to be in a constant state of euphoria to manifest is exhausting and unrealistic. We are human beings with a full spectrum of emotions. We have bad days, sad days, anxious days. To pretend otherwise is to deny a fundamental part of ourselves.
True manifestation isn’t about bypassing your feelings. It’s about being present with them. If you’re feeling frustrated, acknowledge it. If you’re feeling doubt, sit with it. These feelings don’t block your manifestations; trying to suppress them does.
Instead of aiming for “high vibes only,” aim for alignment. Alignment means your thoughts, feelings, and actions are generally pointing in the direction of what you want. It means not actively working against yourself. It means trusting that even on a low-energy day, your underlying desire is still there, still valid.
Allowing Is a Practice
So, if it’s not about forcing, and it’s not about pretending, what is it about?
It’s about allowing. Allowing is a gentle, ongoing practice. It’s about creating space for what you want to enter your life. It’s about noticing when you’re pushing against the current, and finding ways to relax into it instead.
Allowing looks like:
- Trusting your gut feelings when an opportunity arises.
- Being open to receiving, even if it looks different than you expected.
- Releasing attachment to the outcome, while still holding the desire.
- Practicing gratitude for what you already have, which opens you up to more.
Allowing is a subtle art. It’s not passive; it’s an active choice to surrender control and trust the process. It’s understanding that sometimes, the best thing you can do is simply get out of your own way.
As July closes and we move into the heart of summer, take a moment to honestly name one thing you truly want. Then, instead of trying to hustle for it, simply allow yourself to want it, and be open to the gentle unfolding of how it might arrive.
