When a Conversation Just Won't End

Sometimes you're in a conversation that just keeps going, and going, and going. Maybe it's with a friend, a family member, or even just a thought in your own head that won't quit. You feel it draining your energy, and you know it's time to find a way out.

Recognize the Loop

First, just notice it. You don't have to judge it or the person involved. Just observe that the conversation has moved from productive or connecting to a repetitive loop. It’s like a record player stuck on the same groove, and you're feeling the gentle hum of your own energy being siphoned off.

This isn't about being rude or cutting someone off. It's about protecting your own peace and making space for new energy. You deserve to feel clear and whole, even after a tough chat.

Gather Your Tools

For this little ritual, you'll need just a few simple things you likely have on hand:

  • A candle (any kind will do – a tealight, a pillar, even a birthday candle)
  • A pinch of salt
  • A small amount of water (a glass or bowl is perfect)
  • Your own breath

Find a quiet moment when you can be undisturbed for a few minutes. It doesn't have to be right after the conversation, but sometime soon after is best, while the feeling is still present for you to release.

The Ritual for Release

Light your candle. As you watch the flame, think about the conversation that's been circling. Don't rehash it in detail, just acknowledge its presence. See the flame as a point of focus, a small beacon of your own inner light.

Next, take your pinch of salt. Hold it in your hand. Salt has been used for cleansing and purification for centuries. As you hold it, imagine it absorbing any lingering tension, frustration, or exhaustion from the conversation. Feel it drawing that heavy energy out of you.

Now, gently drop the salt into your water. Watch it dissolve. As it disappears into the water, imagine the draining energy dissolving too. It's not gone forever, but it's no longer clinging to you. It's diffused, softened, and returned to a more neutral state.

Finally, take three deep breaths. Inhale slowly, filling your lungs completely. As you exhale, imagine releasing any last bits of the conversation loop. Let it go. With each breath, feel yourself becoming lighter, clearer, and more present in your own body.

Blow out the candle. As the smoke rises, imagine it carrying away any final remnants of the old loop, leaving you with a clean slate.

A Gentle Close

This ritual isn't meant to magically solve every difficult interaction, but it can help you reclaim your energy and set a boundary for yourself. It reminds you that you have the power to decide what you carry with you. You can always choose to release what no longer serves your peace.

Afterward, do something that brings you joy or comfort. Listen to music, step outside, or simply sit in quiet. Give yourself a moment to enjoy the feeling of being free from the loop.
