Destiny number and expression number are the same number. Two names, one fact: the sum of every letter of your birth name. If you arrived here looking for one and the page says the other, you are in the right place.

What the expression number is

It is the sum of your whole name, reduced — every letter of the name on your birth record, first, middle and last, counted once each. Of the numbers in this system it is the broadest: not what you want, not what people see, but what you are equipped with.

The older name for it is the Destiny Number, and that word does it no favours. Nothing about a letter count decides an outcome. What it describes is closer to a kit: a set of capacities you were handed and have been carrying around ever since, whether or not you have found the use for all of them. People generally recognise their own Expression immediately and are surprised by how little of it they have deliberately deployed.

How it is calculated

Every letter takes a digit by its position in the ordinary alphabet: A through I are one to nine, J starts again at one, and S starts again after that. This is the Pythagorean alphabet, which is what essentially all English-language numerology assumes. The Chaldean system assigns different values and leaves nine out of the letter set entirely, which is why a Chaldean site will hand you a different number for the same name and neither of you is wrong.

Add the digits of the whole name. Reduce the total by adding its own digits, and keep going until one digit is left — unless the total stops at eleven, twenty-two or thirty-three on the way, which we hold whole. Two things get printed alongside the answer and both are the point: the compound, which is the total before the last step, and the fadic, which is the single digit under a master.

The nine expression numbers, briefly

A one is equipped to go first, and to be alone with the decision afterwards. A two works through other people and is routinely underestimated for it. A three is built to make something and show it, and goes flat when there is nothing to make. A four builds things that hold and is bored by the part everybody praises. A five is fitted for change, and finds staying put costs more than it costs other people.

A six takes responsibility for people whether or not anyone asked. A seven examines a thing thoroughly and is slow to say what it found. An eight handles consequence, scale and other people’s money without flinching. A nine is equipped to finish, hand over, and stand slightly outside what it built.

Those are one-line sketches and they are deliberately short. The long version of any of them is a reading, not a paragraph on a calculator, and a calculator that tries to be both ends up being neither.

Masters, and karmic debt

The Expression is one of the five positions where we hold eleven, twenty-two and thirty-three whole instead of folding them. It is printed compound over fadic — an eleven appears as 11/2 — and the reason for printing both is that living an eleven as a two is the ordinary resting state rather than a failure to live up to something. The master numbers have their own page, including why we admit thirty-three when several systems do not.

Separately, if the total immediately before the final reduction is thirteen, fourteen, sixteen or nineteen, we read it as carrying a karmic debt and say so in the notation. Where a debt is looked for matters more than the list itself — a rule that only inspects the last value before the collapse will miss a nineteen that passed through a ten on the way down, and the reader will simply never see a section that should have been there. Why your number is different on another site

Four usual causes, all of them conventions rather than mistakes: which letter alphabet the site uses, whether it treats Y and W as vowels (which does not move the Expression but does move its two siblings), whether it keeps masters at this position, and how it normalises a name before counting it. Most sites do not say which choices they made. We state all of ours, which means you can find the exact point two answers part company instead of guessing which one is broken.

Is the destiny number the same as the expression number?

Yes. They are two names for one number: the sum of every letter of the name on your birth record, reduced. Older books tend to say Destiny, newer ones tend to say Expression, and a few use Name Number for the same thing. If a site gives you a different answer under a different label, the difference is coming from the conventions underneath — usually the alphabet or the master-number policy — not from the two words meaning different things.

How do you calculate an expression number?

Give every letter a digit by its position in the alphabet, one through nine, starting again at J and again at S. Add the digits of the whole name. Reduce the total to a single digit, unless it stops at eleven, twenty-two or thirty-three, which we hold whole. The calculator prints each letter with its value, then the running total, then the reduction, so you can check the arithmetic against a piece of paper.

Which name do I use?

The one on your birth record, in full — first, middle and last, as it was first written, including a surname you no longer use. A married or chosen name is a real thing and worth counting separately, but the convention is that it does not replace the original for this number. Enter the original here.
