Mars square Saturn
Mars square Saturn is the accelerator and the brake worked at the same time. Mars is drive, pursuit and the push. Saturn is structure, discipline and the years of work. At a square the push meets a standing resistance, so effort here costs more than it seems to cost other people — and it lasts longer.
It is the aspect of getting there anyway.
An argument about terms
These two are not enemies in the tradition, which is what makes the square interesting. Mars is exalted in Capricorn, Saturn’s own sign — the scheme’s way of saying that drive does its best work under discipline. Saturn, meanwhile, is in fall in Aries, where Mars is at home.
So the argument is about whose terms apply. Under Saturn’s — patience, method, a long horizon — Mars performs at its best. Under Mars’s, Saturn is out of its element and reads as nothing but obstruction. A square keeps that negotiation permanently open.
In love it shows up less as coldness than as delay. Desire is present, and is met by a set of conditions before it is allowed to move: sometimes conditions somebody else set, more often ones carried around so long they have been mistaken for judgement.
How it tends to show up
Wanting something badly and finding a reason to wait.
Anger that arrives late, well after the moment that earned it.
Stamina that outlasts everybody else’s, because the effort was never expected to be easy.
Being harder on your own effort than anyone else would think to be.
What changes the reading
The square is read across a moderate margin, and this contact states itself more plainly the closer it sits.
Saturn's subject is work, structure and authority, so a good deal of what this aspect describes shows up somewhere other than a relationship first.
Whether it reads as discipline or as frustration usually turns on whether there is something worth the waiting. That is not a question a chart is able to settle.
