Saturn

Saturn is the planet the tradition puts in charge of what a thing costs and whether it will hold. In matters of money it stands for structure, discipline, the long compounding curve. In matters of career it stands for mastery, authority, the years of work. Its subject is time, limit and standard, which is worth knowing before reading anything it touches in love.

The tradition places it at home in Capricorn and Aquarius, exalted in Libra, in detriment in Cancer and Leo, in fall in Aries.

What it is doing in a chart

Saturn is classed among the social planets — slower than the personal planets, quicker than the outer ones. That places it on the boundary between a private life and the structures a life is lived inside, and much of its character follows from sitting exactly there.

Beyond those assignments the tradition, as this repository holds it, says nothing about what Saturn means. What follows is description rather than doctrine: its contacts tend to be experienced as delay, and delay is easy to mistake for denial. What is usually happening is closer to a standard being applied — one set early, rarely revisited, and rarely spoken aloud.

It is why Saturn contacts age well. The thing it slowed down is often the thing still standing twenty years later, and the person carrying it seldom credits the planet that made them wait.

Money and work, which is where the tradition puts it

Two of the three pillars name Saturn and the third does not. In money it is the structural planet — the one that compounds, that says no to the purchase, that makes a plan survive contact with a bad year. In work it is mastery and authority, and the years that produce both.

The two are the same instinct answering different questions, which is why a chart that is strict about money is rarely careless about craft.

This page is about the planet and not about you. Which house it occupies, and what else in the chart argues with it, decide how any of the above actually lands.

What changes the reading

Which sign Saturn occupies changes what it is strict about. Which house changes where the strictness lands. What it touches changes who pays for it.

It rules two signs and is exalted in a third, and a Saturn in one of those is working with the grain rather than against it — the same planet, meeting less resistance.

A slow planet describes a long theme rather than an event, so it is read across years rather than across days.
