Personal Year 1

A 1 year opens a cycle. Not a phase, not a mood — a nine-year count that starts here and does not come round again for the better part of a decade. Which is why it is a strange year to be inside. Everyone around you can see the beginning; you mostly experience the fact that nothing is finished yet.

What a 1 year is for

It is for the first move. Somewhere in a 1 year there is a decision that closes doors, and the year is largely organised around it: the leaving, the starting, the naming of a thing you have been circling. It does not have to be dramatic. A 1 year is as often the year somebody registers a business nobody has heard of, or moves to a flat they can barely afford, or says out loud what they actually want to do with their hands.

What makes it a 1 is that it is unrepeatable. You cannot start the same thing twice. The choice you make in a 1 year is the ground the next eight stand on, and that is the real weight of it — not that the year is hard, but that it is load-bearing.

The other thing a 1 year is for is standing alone with something. Not loneliness; authorship. There is usually a stretch where the thing exists only because you keep insisting it does, and no one else can be handed that job. People who are used to being carried find this year genuinely difficult. People who are used to carrying find it a relief, and then find out how tired they are.

The part nobody says

A 1 year is mostly uncomfortable, and most writing about it will not tell you that.

The discomfort has a shape. You are new at the thing you have just started, so you are bad at it, in front of people who watched you leave something you were good at. The competence you spent the last cycle building does not transfer cleanly. There is a gap between the decision and the first evidence that it was right, and that gap is where a 1 year lives — it can run most of the twelve turnings.

It is also a year that attracts advice. Beginning something makes people want to tell you how. Some of that is useful and most of it is the advice-giver's own unstarted thing talking. A 1 year asks you to hold your own counsel longer than is comfortable, which is a different skill from confidence and much less pleasant.

None of that means the year has gone wrong. Discomfort is not a signal to abandon a beginning; it is the ordinary texture of being early.

How the year is cut

Your Personal Year does not run January to December. It runs birthday to birthday — it turned on your last birthday and it turns again on your next one. That is our house rule, and it is not the rule most free calculators use, so a number you have read elsewhere may not match ours.

Inside that year sit twelve turnings, and they do not fall on the 1st of the month either. Each one opens on your own day of the month. If you were born on the 23rd, your turnings open on the 23rd, all year, which is why the strip below has odd-looking edges. They are not arbitrary — they are yours.

The strip is set out for one reader below. Every date on it is real. The numbers beside those dates are not printed, and that is deliberate: those twelve values are the Personal Year Blueprint, and we would rather show you the structure honestly than blur it and call it a preview.

Where the number came from

We do not want you to take our arithmetic on trust. A Personal Year comes from three things added together — the month and day you were born, and the year you are standing in — reduced the way our house rules say to reduce them.

The Personal Year calculator prints a receipt beside the answer: the two exact dates your year runs between, the year we counted it against, and your Life Path and Birth Day set out line by line in plain figures. If your own arithmetic disagrees with ours, you will be able to see exactly where. That is the point of printing it.

What this page does not know

This page knows one number. It does not know your birthday, so it cannot tell you the two dates your year actually runs between. It does not know which turning you are standing in this week. It has not touched your Life Path, which is the number a whole life is counted on rather than a year, and it has not touched your name, which carries several more.

A 1 year read against a Life Path 4 is a different year from a 1 read against a Life Path 5 — same beginning, very different relationship to being new at something. If you want the year rather than the number, count yours and start from your own two dates.
