Personal Year 4

A 4 year is the year you finally read the contract. Not metaphorically, in many cases — there is often an actual document, and it says something you did not know it said.

What a 4 year is for

It is for structure. Four years are where the arrangement gets made properly: the terms written down, the system built, the books reconciled, the qualification finished, the thing that was held together by goodwill given an actual shape. Everything that was improvised in the three years before it comes due here.

The work of a 4 is repetitive by nature. It is the same hours, the same task, the same week again — and the reason it is worth doing is that repetition is the only thing that produces a floor. You cannot get a foundation by having a good idea about one. You get it by turning up to the same unglamorous work for long enough that it becomes a fact.

A 4 year is also the year to fix the boring risk: the insurance nobody renewed, the contract with the missing clause, the arrangement everyone assumed was formal. Not because something bad is scheduled — we do not claim that and would not — but because a 4 year is when you have the patience for it, and you will not have it again for a while.

The part nobody says

It is a slog, and the fact that it is a slog does not mean anything has gone wrong.

Four years get read as punishment, especially by people arriving from a 3. The visibility drops. The invitations thin. The work is unshareable, because there is nothing interesting to say about doing your accounts properly. And there is a particular flavour of tiredness here that comes not from difficulty but from sameness.

The failure mode is the dramatic exit — blowing up the arrangement in month seven because the tedium has become unbearable, and calling it courage. What that usually costs is the floor, and the floor is the whole point of the year. The other failure mode is quieter and more common: doing the work but resenting every hour of it, so that at the end there is a foundation and nobody who wants to build on it.

The reframe that actually helps is small. A 4 year is not asking you to enjoy it. It is asking you to be accurate.

How the year is cut

Your Personal Year runs birthday to birthday — from your last birthday to the day before your next. That is our house rule, and it is not the one you will find on most free calculators, which count from 1 January. If a number elsewhere disagrees with ours, that boundary is usually the reason.

The twelve turnings inside the year open on your own day of the month. Born on the 14th, they open on the 14th. In a year that is mostly repetition, having real edges is the difference between a long grey stretch and a sequence of finishable months.

Where the number came from

Birth month plus birth day plus the year you are standing in, reduced under our house rules. That is all of it.
