Personal Year 5
Motion, and the honest chapter — a 5 year is where people leave things
Not sure this is your number? Count it in one step — two dates come back with it, because we count your year from your birthday rather than from 1 January.
A 5 year moves. Something that was fixed comes loose — an address, a role, a relationship, a routine that had gone unquestioned for years — and it comes loose whether or not you had it on a list.
What a 5 year is for
It is for change of shape. Five years are where a life gets rearranged rather than improved: the move, the switch, the new city, the different hours, the thing you stop doing. It is the loosest year of the nine and it has the widest range of outcomes, which is why generic descriptions of it are useless.
It is also for appetite. A 5 year tends to return curiosity to people who had gone flat, and it is often where a genuinely new interest starts — a language, an instrument, a trade, a body doing something it had not tried. Some of the most durable parts of a life begin as a 5-year distraction.
And it is for negotiating your own leash. Everyone has an arrangement about how much freedom they get, made years earlier with someone else or with themselves. A 5 year reopens it. That is uncomfortable for everyone in the room, and it is the actual work of the year.
The part nobody says
A 5 year is where people leave things, and most writing about it will call that "embracing change" and move on.
The honest version is harder. Jobs end here. So do marriages, tenancies, business partnerships and long friendships. Sometimes because they were finished and the year gave someone the nerve to say so, which is the good version. Sometimes because a person mistook restlessness for a verdict, walked out of something that only needed adjusting, and spent the next three years learning the difference.
We are not going to tell you which one you are in, because we cannot know that and nobody selling you a paragraph can. What is worth saying is that the two feel identical in month three and very different in month eleven, and that almost nothing in a 5 year is improved by being decided quickly.
The other thing worth saying: not every 5 year contains a departure. Some of them are just a year in which the room is rearranged and the same people are still in it.
How the year is cut
Your Personal Year runs birthday to birthday. It opened on your last birthday and closes the day before your next. That is our house rule, and it is not the January boundary most free calculators use — if a number you found elsewhere disagrees with ours, that is nearly always why.
The twelve turnings open on your own day of the month, not the 1st. Born on the 14th, your turnings open on the 14th, all year. In a year this mobile, knowing your real edges is what turns "I should change something" into "I have until this date to decide", which is a more survivable sentence.
The strip below is worked for one reader. Real dates, and no values printed — the twelve numbers are the Personal Year Blueprint. We would rather show the frame empty than fill it with something we made up.
Where the number came from
Your birth month and birth day, added to the year you are standing in, reduced under our house rules. One addition, one collapse, and both are printed.
The Personal Year calculator sets a receipt beside the answer — your two dates, the year counted against, and your Life Path and Birth Day derived line by line — so you can check us against a piece of paper.
What this page does not know
It does not know your birthday, so it does not know your dates or which turning you are standing in. It has not touched your Life Path, and it has not touched your name.
A 5 year over a Life Path 4 is a year of arguing with yourself. Over a Life Path 5 it is the most natural year in the cycle and the easiest one to overspend. The number is the same. The year is not. Count yours.
A worked example
Take Carmela Villanueva, born on the 14th, and suppose the addition landed on 5. Then the year runs 14 March 2026 to 13 March 2027 — birthday to birthday — and it is cut into twelve turnings that open on the 14th of each month rather than the 1st.
- 114 Mar → 13 Apr
- 214 Apr → 13 May
- 314 May → 13 Jun
- 414 Jun → 13 Jul
- 514 Jul → 13 Aug
- 614 Aug → 13 Sep
- 714 Sep → 13 Oct
- 814 Oct → 13 Nov
- 914 Nov → 13 Dec
- 1014 Dec → 13 Jan
- 1114 Jan → 13 Feb
- 1214 Feb → 13 Mar
The dates are real and the numbers beside them are not printed. That is deliberate — those twelve values are written out in the Personal Year Blueprint, and a blurred number would be a sales technique rather than an honest edge. To see this strip with your own dates on it, count your year.
Three windows in a 5 year
The restlessness
The opening stretch is where the walls of the last year start feeling close. Nothing has gone wrong. The arrangement that was fine in a 4 year simply stops fitting, and the first impulse is usually to change the wrong thing.
The move
The middle is where the actual change lands — the address, the job, the ending, the trip that turns out to have been a decision. Most 5-year decisions happen here and most of them happen faster than the people around you expect.
The aftermath
The closing stretch is living in the consequence. This is where you find out which of the changes was the real one and which was noise, and it is usually a quieter three months than the eight before it.
Those three windows are dated against Carmela Villanueva’s birthday. Yours fall on your own day of the month, which is the point — why we count from the birthday.
The other eleven turnings are written, each with its own dates.
